Drone
We don’t know how the FAA feels about drones over the Preserve, but Meadows Field is only a few miles away. However, this one did not seem to go very high.
Insects are important too.
Turkey Vulture
“Kettles” of Turkey Vultures regularly pass over Panorama Vista on their annual migrations. People in neighborhoods all over Bakersfield see them too and might even have them roosting in nearby trees.

Hawks’ Nest An Old Favorite
This nest in a utility tower on the Preserve has been used for decades by hawks or occasionally by owls, depending on who gets there first. Hawks have dominated lately. Last year, red tailed Hawks raised 3 chicks there (see the left photo); they have gotten big enough to flap their wings to see how it feels. In the right photo, a parent’s head can barely be seen sticking up over the nest’s edge. Both parents take care of their young. It is impossible to tell if there are eggs there yet. More photos to come as the season progresses.
